FAQs About Braces

Have you or your child been recommended braces by your dentist? If you're considering braces for whatever reason, you're likely to have a few concerns. If you have never had braces, you may be unsure of what to expect. Here are some of the most often asked FAQs about braces, along with their answers.

How long will I have to wear braces?

Different factors determine the duration of braces. Age is one of the factors which can make braces work faster or slower. Children have softer bones than adults, and due to the eruption of new permanent teeth, they tend to get faster results, and the process slows down when increasing age.

The second factor is the condition of your teeth before getting braces. The purpose of braces is to re-align the teeth, so the extent of misalignment determines the time for braces.

The same goes for the type of braces like traditional metal braces that work faster and better than other braces. The last and most important factor is taking care of them properly and getting them replaced when needed.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are meant to re-align your teeth and keep them in proper shape. When you wear braces, re-alignment starts from day one, which is the exciting yet a little painful part. You feel discomfort in the beginning, which lasts for just a few days, probably less than a week, and then disappears.

The pain sometimes gets disruptive and annoying, which can be relieved by mild pain killers. Try not to eat solid food for one to two days after getting your braces on because the teeth have already started straightening out, so it might cause more pain.

What can I eat with braces?

You can feel soreness and tingling sensation in your teeth for the first few days, so avoid putting pressure on your teeth during an early stage. You can eat soft food for the first week like mashed potatoes, porridge, boiled or scrambled eggs, yogurt, bread, smoothies, soup, etc. When the process gets stable, you can switch to other foods like pasta, sushi, etc. If you are eating chicken or anything harder, try to chew it slowly so that it does not interrupt the alignment process, and enjoy your favorite food with a bit of care.

How do you clean your teeth with braces?

Brushing around braces just requires a little extra attention and time to ensure that all food particles are cleaned. The use of an electric toothbrush may be beneficial to some. When flossing, you can either thread the floss below the crosswire or use a Waterpik to get between each tooth.

How much do braces cost?

The cost of braces does not apply uniformly to all patients. The treatment plan will determine this. The traditional metal braces are cheaper than any other type of braces.

Every dental process needs good research and proper care to work out. Some factors like pain, time duration, cleaning, etc., can be managed by care and following all the precautions. Make sure to have some knowledge before getting the treatment to avoid any complications in the future.
